Blooming Where You're Planted: Our Story in Birmingham, AL

"For I know the plans I have for you... plans to give you a hope and a future."

— Jeremiah 29:11

The name "A Country Mile" comes from an old expression — when someone says something is a country mile away, they mean it's farther than it looks. The journey is longer than you expected. The destination requires more than you planned for.

That's our story, honestly.

How It Started

I didn't set out to start a business. I set out to make a gift.

It was about six years ago. I needed something personal and meaningful for a friend going through one of the hardest seasons of her life. I couldn't find what I was looking for in any store — everything felt either too generic or too expensive to actually give. So I made it myself: a small leather pouch with her initials and a scripture she loved pressed into the front.

She cried. And she still has it.

That moment planted something in me. The question that came with it was simple and a little terrifying: What if I could do this for other people?

Birmingham, Alabama

We're Birmingham people through and through. There's something about this city — the warmth of it, the deep faith culture, the way neighbors still know each other's names — that felt like the right soil for what we wanted to grow.

Birmingham has a strong tradition of craftspeople and artisans. It's a city that values things made by hand and with care. When we opened our first small studio space, the response from the local community was more than we could have hoped for.

We started doing markets. Then pop-ups. Then we got a small permanent space. Then we added permanent bracelet appointments. Each step felt less like a business plan and more like following a thread — seeing where it led and trusting the One holding the other end.

The Jeremiah 29:11 Reality

I'll be honest with you: there have been seasons when I wasn't sure we were going to make it. There was a stretch about two years in when orders slowed, and I questioned everything. Was I supposed to be doing this? Was it naive to think a small handmade business could sustain a family?

Jeremiah 29:11 got me through more than one late night. "For I know the plans I have for you... plans to give you a hope and a future." The thing about that verse that most people miss is the context: it was written to people in exile. People who were a long way from where they thought they'd be. People who couldn't see the end of the story.

Sometimes you're in the middle of your country mile — farther from the destination than you expected, more tired than you planned — and you just have to keep walking.

We kept walking.

Where We Are Now

Today, A Country Mile is a real thing. We have a full studio in Birmingham. We do permanent bracelet appointments by the dozens each month. We ship custom pieces all over the country. We have a community of customers who feel more like friends — people who come back for birthdays, anniversaries, and big life milestones.

None of that was in the original plan. All of it feels like grace.

If you're local to Birmingham, we'd love to have you visit us. And if you're not — we're so glad the internet brought you here. However you found us, we're genuinely glad you're part of this story.

We're still on our country mile. But the view from here is really something.
